The 40-day Chunyun period (Spring Festival travel rush) of this year was concluded on February 24, 2014. According to statistics, during the Chunyun period 7,004,500 passengers were transported from Changzhou, 2.65% lower than last year. This is the first decline of Chunyun passenger flow for years.
The decline was mainly due to the road traffic drop of 7.43% over last year.
Increase of private cars and the highway toll free policy for Spring Festival caused significant diversion from the traditional road passengers, while high-speed rail and aviation offers more options of travel. Among them, the opening of Nanjing-Hangzhou high-speed rail brought about a 21% drop of passenger flow of Liyang Road Transport Co. Ltd.; the increasing private cars and popularity of carpooling caused a 43.66% decline of passenger flow of former ‘gold lines’ from Changzhou to northern Jiangsu, Anhui, etc. operated by Changzhou Transport Group. In addition , since the second half of last year, the passenger flow of migrant workers has shown a downward trend, which kept dropping after the holiday, resulting in the gradual loss of short-haul passenger traffic.
Railway traffic remained the growth during the Chunyun of this year and transported a total of 1,300,500 passengers, increased by 17.01%. Changzhou Airport’s throughput reached 196,300, an increase of 46.10%.
