On November 5th, the salt cavern gas storage project of Towngas (Jintan) Limited was officially started. Vice Mayor Mr. Shi Zhijun and Mr. Alfred Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited and Chairman of Towngas Limited, attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
The salt cavern gas storage project is located in Tinxiang Village, Zhixi Town, Jintan. It is the first large-scale township gas salt cavern project in China, which is jointly invested by Hong Kong & China Gas Company Limited and Chinasalt Jintan Co., Ltd. It is a two-phase program expected to be completed and put into use in 2020. By then, the total gas storage capacity of 10 caverns will reach 378.5 million cubic meters, of which the amount of working gas in storage is 217.5 million cubic meters.
In 2007, Chinasalt Jintan Co., Ltd. constructed Asia's first underground salt cavern gas storage project. After then, the company has cooperated respectively with PetroChina and Sinopec in large underground gas storage programs for West-East Gas Transmission and Sichuan-East China Gas Transmission. The new project is oriented for regional emergency and peaking supply as well as strategic reserves in East China, which also aims to transmit natural gas outside in connection with the pipe network of West-East Gas Transmission and Sichuan-East China Gas Transmission projects, as well as the high-voltage network of the branches of Towngas in East China.
