New Year’s Day is celebrated all over the world which is called Yuan Dan in Chinese. In ancient China, Yuan Dan refers to the first day of the lunar calendar. The origin of the word Yuan Dan can be traced back to 5000 years ago. It was first appeared in The Book of Jin.

Since the western calendar has been introduced into China, Yuan Dan refers to the first day of Gregorian calendar. In 1911, the Republic of China decided to use the Gregorian calendar and call 1st January Yuan Dan, which was not proclaimed. In 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was founded, the decision of adopting Gregorian calendar and the confirmation of Yuan Dan were published formally.
