        Changzhou’s CPI in January edged up 0.8% year-on-year

        Due to the climbing food prices before the Spring Festival and the price adjustment of some medical and health services, in January, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Changzhou rose by 1.5% on a monthly basis, and the increase was 1 percentage point higher than that of the previous month; it rose by 0.8% year-on-year, with an increase of 0.3 percentage points over the previous month. 

        On a year-on-year basis, the price of food, tobacco and alcohol rose by 3.3% in January, pushing up the CPI by about 0.88 percentage points. Among them, the prices of fresh vegetables and fresh fruits increased by 7.9% and 5.4% respectively, with an increase of 3.7 percentage points and 2.6 percentage points respectively over the previous month; The price of eggs increased by 5.4% from a negative 12.1% last month; The price of aquatic products increased by 8.1%, and the four items together affected the CPI increase by approximately 0.48 percentage points. Pork and chicken prices dropped by 4.5% and 6.8% respectively.

        From a month-on-month perspective, food, alcohol and tobacco prices rose by 3.0%, an increase of 1.9 percentage points over the previous month. With the impact of the cold current on the fishing industry, the price of shrimps and crabs increased by 15.6%. The price of fresh vegetables rose by 15.5% as the transportation costs increased and local vegetables were not yet available on the market; egg and pork prices rose by 11.3% and 4.5% respectively due to the increase in demand before the Spring Festival. Among non-food prices, the price of some medical care services rose by 5.1% due to the price adjustment made by the municipal Medical Security Administration. The price of clothing was basically flat.
