In a significant development for environmental advocacy, Changzhou hosted the focal event of the 2024 National Low Carbon Day on May 15. Under the banner of “green and low-carbon development for a beautiful China," this year's theme underscores the imperative of sustainable living. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment, in collaboration with the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, has chosen Changzhou as the host of the main event, marking a departure from previous events typically held in provincial capitals.

Changzhou's emergence as a trillion-yuan-GDP city in 2023, despite its modest population and geographical footprint, underscores its remarkable economic trajectory. Notably, the city has achieved commendable milestones in environmental quality, earning plaudits as a national exemplar for ecological civilization and a beacon for low-carbon urban development. Transitioning from its industrial roots to a hub for new energy, Changzhou's decade-long journey has culminated in the establishment of a robust ecosystem for energy generation, storage, transmission, and utilization. In 2023, the output value in the new energy field reached 768.07 billion yuan, with the photovoltaic industry accounting for one-tenth of the national scale and the completeness of the electric vehicle battery industry chain ranking first nationwide.

As one of the third batch of national low-carbon pilot cities, Changzhou vigorously pursues the modernization of the "Southern Jiangsu Model," leading the province in reducing carbon emissions. Changzhou has also enacted the country's first "New Energy Industry Promotion Regulations" and formulated the first "Water Ecological Environment Protection Regulations" among prefecture-level cities, continuously improving mechanisms for green and low-carbon development.
